What is the PG&E Mentoring Program?
The PG&E Mentoring Program is the mentoring program created for all members of the Employee Associations at PG&E.
It combines a self-directed mentoring website with monthly training sessions to develop
skills and connect employees. Its goals include:
- develop you as a mentor, mentee, or both
- support you in creating mentoring relationships
- expand and strengthen your connection to other PG&E employees
- assist you in accomplishing personal and professional goals
How should I use the PG&E Mentoring Program?
Use the PG&E Mentoring Program when you:
- want to work on certain personal or professional goals (ex: running a marathon)
- need to learn new skills (ex: interviewing to hire new employees)
- are faced with a new project and you need to tap into company experience (ex: making a presentation to your boss)
- are new to the company and you need to learn the ropes or meet new people
- you are traveling and want to connect with other employees around California (ex: business meeting in Fresno)
- have skills, experiences, expertise, information, advice that you would like to share with other employees
How do I get started?
- Go to the Home page and click on the link that says, Click here to register for access
- Complete the required information, including your PG&E email address and click [Register!]
- An email will be sent to you at your PG&E email address to confirm your login and to give you further instructions
- Set your professional goals. Use the Goals Worksheet under the Mentoring Process tab
- Create a personal profile
- Search the database for matches or request to be matched
- Use the on-line Resource Center to learn mentoring skills
- Participate in monthly professional skills training sessions (Mentor Skill Sessions)
- Use the Mentoring Proposal and Agreement to create mentoring relationships to work on your goals - under Mentoring Process tab
- Register your mentoring relationship
Expectations of Mentors and Mentees
What is a Mentor?
Someone willing to share experiences, and any advice, guidance, feedback, wisdom, mistakes made, and lessons learned in the process.
Expectations of Mentees
It is the responsibility of the Mentee to drive the relationship with the Mentor.
- Have a goal to work on before contacting a Mentor (goal worksheets in the Resource Center on the Mentor Website)
- Use the Mentor Website (www.pgementoring.com) to connect to potential Mentors in the Program
- Email/call Mentor to explore if there is a fit with your goal and Mentor's experience and time
- Confirm the match on the Mentor Website and you'll receive a Mentor Success Workbook and 12 weekly emails with tips and ideas for your relationship
- Propose a period of time to work together: 1 meeting, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months. Set a start and end date.
- Print out and use the Mentoring Proposal and Agreement from the Resource Center on the Mentor Website and formalize your mentoring relationship
- Confirm each meeting
- Don't cancel meetings
- Don't expect the Mentor to do the work for you
- Ask a lot of questions
- Show appreciation
- Follow up
- Execute
Expectations of Mentors
- Remind the Mentee of his/her responsibility for driving the relationship
- Print out this "Expectations of Mentors and Mentees" list and review it with your Mentee
- Ask to see a goal worksheet before you agree to be a Mentor
- Confirm the match if you want to move forward; decline if you don't
- Ask to see a Mentoring Proposal and Agreement outlining expectations and structure of mentoring relationship
- Schedule at least 30 minutes a week or 2 hours a month depending on the goal
- Provide guidance, ideas, wisdom, experiences; don't provide the answers
- Make connections to people and resources ONLY as you see fit
- Hold Mentee accountable to what Mentee said he/she would accomplish
